We provide an Introductory Course at our Home Apiary in Roosky which consists of 10 hives and over half a million happy bees. This course runs from May to August and can be on a one to one basis or in groups of up to 20. We provide the protective clothing needed, all you need to bring is wellingtons. The course last for approximately 2-3 hours and is very people friendly and can be booked at a time and date to suit you weather permitting.

This course is open to everyone as anyone can be a beekeeper. Whether you are enjoying a Cruise on the Shannon or holidaying nearby or specifically coming for this course, it will help you decide whether or not Beekeeping is for you or maybe you are just generally interested in Bees or how honey is produced. This course would be a fascinating insight to their life and social habits and something to talk about and fascinate your friends with afterwards. It is also for people that have bees but find it hard to manage them. We will instruct on best practises and offer you a management plan for the beekeeping year. 

We will take you through what a hive is and the differences between the males and females and how they work together in a highly developed social structure from egg to the end of their lives. We will be showing you all the different tools you need to work a hive and how to light a smoker and its uses on why it calms the bees. Then talking you through your personnel protective clothing and the safety aspects of them you will learn how to safely dress to minimise your chances of been stung. We will then suit you up and bring you to a small hive knowing as a Nucleus Hive which consists of around 10,000 bees. You will get hands on experience working on a hive, gaining confidence before moving you on to a full hive which consists of around 60,000 bees. At the end of this course and through out you can ask all the questions that come to mind and hopefully by the end you will have gained a satisfying insight to the world of bees and their keeper.
